Ronald S. Cohen, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer

Ronald Cohen has been the Chief Executive Officer of United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara Counties since 1987. Cohen has been with United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) since 1983. Prior to the CEO position, Cohen was the Clinical Director of UCP. He established the first community-based group homes for non-ambulatory children with behavioral disorders in the state of California, and is responsible for developing the wide continuum of services the agency provides today. Under his leadership, UCP has developed 30 fully accessible rent-subsidized community homes and apartments. Cohen is widely regarded as an expert on developing housing for special needs populations. He has testified before the California State Legislature and the United States Congress on alternatives to institutional living. Prior to joining UCP, he co-founded Intermountain Youth Center in Tucson, Ariz., where he helped pioneer the use of Applied Behavioral Analysis in home-like settings for the treatment of adjudicated Native American youth and individuals with mental retardation.

David's life has been about helping people with disabilities - from his childhood, when his family welcomed disabled friends into their home, to working with his brothers in Guatemala and experiencing the conditions people with disabilities lived in firsthand, to founding "Wheels for Humanity" in 1996. David is a renowned global advocate for disability rights. He has lectured and been the keynote speaker at numerous disability-focused symposiums and expositions, has worked with numerous wheelchair manufacturers on design and seating elements, and has established global partnerships with international non-profits and corporations. Originally from Torrance, Calif., David, his parents and his five brothers moved to Wisconsin when he was 10 years old. David enjoys cooking and is an avid golfer. H e has been a resident of the Studio City for 25 years.
 
Michael Allen, Director of Operations

Michael has been a part of the UCP Wheels for Humanity family since the beginning of 2005 when he joined the team as Volunteer Coordinator. His experience and drive to support the mission enabled him to be promoted to Director of Operations- overseeing the operation and assisting in programs. He received his BA from San Diego State University after studying a year at the prestigious University of Wollongong in Australia. Michael then served as the Program Manager for SOS Peru - an organization that supports education for street children throughout Peru, and has given his time volunteering in various parts of the developing world. Michael is a Southern California native who currently resides in Ventura. He enjoys surfing, softball and weekend runs on his motorcycle.

David has been in charge of quality control in our warehouse since 2007. Previously, David served as a Rehabilitative Technology Supplier (wheelchair seating specialist) for 11 years at such companies as Inland Valley Respiratory, Option One, Continental Hospital Supply and Design Mobility. He has also volunteered with UCP Wheels for Humanity since 2002, participating in three distributions a year to Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Tijuana. David is an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping, fishing, and hiking and mountain biking ... sometimes with one of his four children or 11 grandchildren.

Heather worked in journalism for many years, including six years at the Toronto Star as a reporter and copy editor and 16 years at the Los Angeles Times as a copy editor, before joining UCP Wheels for Humanity in 2004. Heather has a journalism degree from Algonquin College in Ottawa and is currently pursuing a BA in Communication Disorders at California State University, Northridge. Heather, her husband, Joe, and daughter, Faith, are members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Studio City. Heather is co-leader of her daughter's Brownie Troop.
 
Gilbert Martinez, Production Manager

Gil came to UCP Wheels for Humanity in 2000 with extensive experience in warehouse and production management, inventory control, and shipping and receiving. His skills as a warehouse manager, which involves everything from training volunteers, to rebuilding used wheelchairs, to being an inspiring role model for troubled youth, make him an integral member of the UCP Wheels for Humanity team. His dedication to mission extends into his family life - making trips to Chihuahua, Mexico, where he and his cousin, Alonzo, have set up a wheelchair repair facility to maintain the UCP Wheels for Humanity chairs that have been given to people with disabilities in the region.  
 
Brian Miller, Director of Development

Brian came to UCP Wheels for Humanity in 2006 with an extensive background in non-profit management and development. He served as the Director of Residential Services at Bienvenidos Children's Services and has held positions in child advocacy and social welfare, and designed behavior intervention and modification programs at Hathaway Sycamores Children and Family Services. Brian also assisted in the program design of the La Cañada Unified School District's Foothills School for severely emotionally disturbed high school students and taught Special Education and Film/Screenwriting there. Brian earned a BS in Business and Management from the Woodbury University School of Business and Management, and an MFA in Screenwriting from UCLA. Originally from Tucson, Arizona, Brian resides in the San Fernando Valley.

Angela is the newest member of the UCP Wheels for Humanity family. She recently served as a para-professional educator at the Van Deene Avenue Elementary School in Torrance, working with kindergarten, second and fourth grade students. Angela specialized in assisting ESL students and was a tutor with UCLA's Gear Up (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) program. She is working towards earning a BA in American Literature and Chicana/o Studies from UCLA, and hopes to pursue a California Teaching Credential after graduation.
